NAPOLEONIC FRENCH PRISONER OF WAR SPINNING JENNY CA. 1810
A turning spinning-wheel mechanism that’s open at the bottom. It consists of a number of wheels and a hand crank to operate the mechanism. This piece is made by French prisoners of war in English captivity. The women using these spinning-wheels always wore high hats of starched lace. This traditional Celtic wear hails from Brittany. This high lace hat is called the Coiffe Bigoudène, they exist in differing height and execution. The hat can be seen as part of the regional costume at the party of the embroiderers, which is organized yearly in France in the town of Pont l’Abbé even today.
