ANTIQUE COCO-DE-MER CA 1880

Very nice and above all: pure coco-de-mer with female contour lines.
The coco-de-mer Lodoicea Maldivensis, a.k.a. the sea-, or double coconut is only found on the Seychelles.

For a long time the size and shape of the nuts, stripped of their green fibre-like shells, were the stuff of erotic fantasies.
Sailors who for the first time discovered the fruit floating on the Indian Ocean, decided that it strongly resembled a woman’s rear end.

On the Maldives the nut was seen as a decoration of priceless value, and was also used in medicine.
The Europeans who visited the Maldives also took an interest in the nut.
They took it home for their private collections and for decorating their homes.

Size:
Height 41 cm. (16 inches)
Width 29 cm. (11.5 inches)
